Tradition of the Upazila

Laksam Nawab Bari, a relic of national heritage. Built with British artefacts, the historic house commemorates Nawab Faizunnesa, the only female Nawab of the Indian subcontinent and the first pioneer of the women's movement, has a fine architecture, one of the most beautiful in South Asia. Although the memorial house has been unprotected for years, efforts have recently been made to turn it into an attractive archeological site. The process of approving the allocation of around Tk 9 crore for this purpose is in the final stage. The house will start changing as soon as it is allocated. The possibility of economic development can be seen around the beautiful house. The house of the historical Nawab Faizunnesa is located on the banks of Dakatiya river in Paschimgaon of Laksam municipality of Comilla district. There is disagreement about the construction year of the house which is the bearer of tradition. It is said that after 18 years of marriage to Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani, the only woman in the subcontinent, she came to know that her husband Hasan Ali Zamindar had another wife. Extraordinary personality, self-respecting, determined Nawab Faizunnesa could not accept it. He built this house on 3 and a half acres of land with his wedding cabin at a cost of 1 lakh 1 rupees. It took about three years to build the house. The house was built with cement, rod, lime and surki during the British period. On the west side of the house there is a family mosque with an immaculate architectural style with 10 domes. Next to the mosque is the family cemetery, where Nawab Faizunnesa and his descendants are laid to rest.

Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani was very pious. He used to sit in this house and conduct all the public welfare activities of the subcontinent from behind the scenes, including the administration of justice, roads, bridges, schools and madrasas. In the evolution of time, the house gained wide recognition as a historical house in the country and abroad. Nawab Faizunnesa waqfed the house before his death.

The house of Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani is such a magnificent architecture that it is considered one of the most beautiful houses in South Asia. This house, which is reminiscent of the national heritage, has become desolate due to neglect year after year. The beautiful environment next to the house, the plants, the garden, nothing is so noticeable now. Unusual to look around the building, lime-surki-brick-plaster is falling off. Jandhara rods have come out in places, doors and windows are breaking open, ink is hanging on the walls. Impressions are gained in a fluid, global, diffused way. The Ministry of Culture has taken steps to preserve the house, which is on the verge of destruction due to lack of proper maintenance and renovation. This has created a huge potential for economic development around this beautiful house.

According to sources, the Ministry of Culture has entrusted the Department of Archeology, Bangladesh, with the responsibility of preserving the 4-acre 53-acre property owned by Faizunnesa Chowdhurani, which was published in the form of a gazette. Although the general public of Laksam was overjoyed at such an announcement, the illegal occupants were worried. The house will be modernized and converted into an attractive archeological center, sources said. In the sincerity of Tajul Islam, the process of allocating Tk 9 crore is in the final approval stage. The renovation of the historic house will soak the tourist's heart. It will become one of the places of interest for domestic and foreign tourists. If the house is modernized, there will be economic development in Laksham. Revenue income will be earned. Chittagong and Sylhet Regional Director of the Department of Archeology. Md. Ataur Rahman said, Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani is a pioneer of women's awakening. In order to preserve his memory, an initiative has already been taken under the Department of Archeology to turn the Nawab's house into an attractive archeological center. A project worth around Tk 9 crore is in the process of approval for this purpose. Renovation work will begin as soon as the project is approved. If the project is implemented, Laksham will be an important place in the country for archeological tourism.
